Veteran producer, composer and multi-instrumentalist Phil Field teams up with his wife, singer-songwriter Dee Jackson Field, and quintessential funk bassist Buddy Hank to form D'Slyce, a band that blurs the lines between musical genres and delivers a unique hybrid sound that merges tradition with innovation.
.
PHIL FIELDwas born and raised in East Orange, NJ. He began studying piano at age seven, making his Carnegie Hall debut at age 10. At 17, his classical background led him to The Oberlin Conservatory, and while he was a student there, he joined the disco-funk band Aurra, co-writing their first big hit “Are You Single.” A year later he joined the Mtume band and co-wrote songs for their most popular and best-selling albums, “Juicy Fruit” and “You, Me and He.” He’s also collaborated with other artists, including Gwen Guthrie, Mavis Staples, Nancy Wilson and Mary J. Blige. He co-wrote Roy Ayers’ smash single ‘Hot’ and Toni Braxton’s hit, “How Many Ways.” His songs and his sound have been sampled by The Notorious B.I.G., Queen Latifah, Alicia Keys, Jay-Z and many others.
.
DEE JACKSON FIELDsays her childhood home in Newark, NJ, was always filled with the sound of music— jazz, gospel and soul. As a student at Rutgers Newark, Dee joined the chorale and began exploring other genres and styles— including classical, folk, rock, pop and R&B. Around this time, she landed at Island Records, producing and writing for the label’s girl groups. Dee’s debut album, ‘#DeeJacksonFieldProject,’ is a showcase of her knack for songwriting as well as her vocal panache.
.
BUDDY HANK, who has been called “the bass players’ favorite bass player,” has no shame in claiming the 'funk' handle. After all, at various times throughout his career, the East Orange native has played bass with four funk bands—Slave, Aurra, Young & Company and Steve Arrington’s Hall of Fame. He co-wrote the Young & Company hit “I Like What You’re Doing To Me” and Arrington’s “Weak At The Knees,” which has been sampled by Jay-Z, Jermaine Dupree, Ice-Cube and others.
On stage, D'Slyce pulls together a group that includes not only a powerhouse rhythm section with drums and guitar, but also, at times, saxophone, trumpet, and afro-latin percussion. Behind the scenes, the members of D'Slyce write and produce records that successfully cross musical boundaries. Their latest singles, “Here We Go” and “No More Tears (The Remix)” are proof of their genre-blending mastery. D'SLYCE . . . a new standard is set!
